Punjab Assembly passes resolution to ban social media for children under 16

The Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution seeking a ban on social media use by children under the age of 16.

The resolution was moved by the chairperson of the Child Protection Bureau, Sarah Ahmad, in July.

It stated that protecting children’s physical, mental and moral development is the responsibility of the state. It said that exposure to inappropriate content on social media is putting children at risk of mental stress and other harmful effects.

The resolution said that Australia, France, China and several US states have introduced laws and restrictions on social media use by minors.

It called for effective legislation in Pakistan to ensure a safer future for children.

The resolution also demanded that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) introduce an age-verification system on social media platforms.
