Residents and traders warn of health risks, accidents and economic losses as sewerage and road conditions worsen
Residents of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 13-D, Karachi, say that the area’s sewerage system and road network have completely collapsed, making daily life increasingly difficult.
The issue came to light during a visit by the Dialogue Pakistan team under its civic awareness initiative “Karachi Aisa Nahi Tha”, aimed at understanding ground realities through direct engagement with local communities.
According to locals, extensive digging linked to a Railway residential project has left sewerage lines damaged and open.
As a result, contaminated gutter water frequently overflows onto the roads, creating severe sanitation problems.
Area shopkeepers said the situation has led to the spread of diseases, disrupted business activity, and made it nearly impossible even for worshippers to reach nearby mosques safely.
A loader vehicle driver highlighted that the damaged and uneven roads have become a major hazard.
“The roads are broken and full of standing water. Vehicles get stuck, accidents happen regularly, yet no authority seems willing to take responsibility,” he said.
Residents also recalled a recent incident in which a motorcyclist reportedly fell into an open gutter while passing through the area.
“There is no proper drainage, and water accumulates everywhere. Despite repeated complaints, no practical solution has been provided,” a local resident said.
Another citizen expressed frustration, saying residents are exhausted after repeatedly trying to draw attention to the issue.
“We have done everything we can, but there is no serious response from the authorities,” he said.
Residents have appealed to Mayor Karachi to urgently resolve the problems in the Gilani Railway area, urging that proper sewerage and water lines be installed to prevent further suffering.
