Residents in Karachi’s busy Dalmia area have raised serious concerns over a dangerously deteriorating pedestrian bridge, warning that it has become a hazard rather than a facility.

Locals told Dialogue Pakistan team under its Karachi Aisa Nahi Tha drive, that several incidents have already occurred, including children getting trapped while crossing. “Two children were left hanging before, and just yesterday another child got stuck here,” a resident said, adding, “Karachi was not like this before.”

The bridge, meant to provide safe passage for pedestrians, is now in a critical state.

Several steps are missing, and a large, dangerous gap has formed in the middle, putting thousands of daily commuters—especially schoolchildren—at risk of a serious accident.

Residents say the bridge is no longer safe to use. “You’ve seen the condition yourself. It’s not fit for walking anymore.

There used to be proper covering, but it has been stolen. Even small metal fittings are removed and taken away,” one local explained.

He added that for over a decade, authorities have carried out only temporary fixes. “They come, do minor patchwork, and leave. But the entire structure from one end to the other is unstable.”

The consequences have been severe. “Children fall, women lose balance while climbing, and many people get injured,” another resident said. “Some people don’t notice the gap and end up hanging. We often stop women and guide them to cross the road instead.”

Several accidents have already been reported, including one where a motorcyclist was injured after falling due to a broken step. “I’ve personally witnessed seven accidents,” a local claimed, adding that injured victims are often rushed to hospital in rickshaws.

In one recent incident, a school-going child fell into a deep pit beneath the bridge, suffering injuries to the head, arm and back. “The child is still at home, injured,” the resident said.

Frustrated citizens have appealed to the authorities for immediate action. “Either remove this bridge or repair it properly so people can feel safe,” one man urged.

They pointed out that crossing the road below is equally dangerous due to heavy traffic, making a functional pedestrian bridge essential. “The government should at least have enough budget to fix one bridge,” a resident remarked.

Locals also stressed that the issue particularly affects schoolchildren and nearby residents. “Adults may somehow manage, but it’s a serious problem for children. God forbid, if someone falls from the middle, it could be fatal.”

Expressing wider frustration, residents criticised the Sindh government for neglecting public welfare. “At least care for the people. This country belongs to its citizens,” one said, urging authorities to take responsibility.

Citizens have been encouraged to raise their voices and report similar issues in their areas.
