Umme Rubab Chandio, a female campaigning for justice over the killing of her father, grandfather and uncle has renewed allegations that influential feudal figures in Sindh continue to evade accountability through political power and systemic protection.
Speaking to Dialogue Pakistan about the prolonged legal battle, she said her family had organised a public convention intended to challenge entrenched feudal practices and encourage ordinary citizens to assert their democratic rights.
According to her, the gathering was planned shortly after her brother’s wedding in January and was aimed at conveying a message to tribal and political leaders that their authority depended on public support.
Rubab alleged that the attack on her family was carried out to silence opposition to feudal influence and discourage others from speaking against powerful groups.
She stated that court proceedings continued for several years, involving lengthy witness testimonies and repeated cross-examinations. She claimed that despite the presence of eyewitnesses and supporting evidence, attempts were made throughout the process to protect those accused in the case.
Umme Rubab further argued that feudal structures continue to influence social and political life in parts of Sindh, restricting people’s freedom to vote independently and seek justice through state institutions.
Describing the campaign as both personal and political, she said she had continued her struggle despite ongoing threats to her safety.
“Challenging feudalism is not easy, but remaining silent in the face of injustice is not an option,” she said.
She also criticised delays in the justice system, arguing that prolonged legal proceedings effectively deny victims timely justice.
Calling for institutional accountability, she expressed hope that the case would establish a precedent demonstrating that influential individuals can also be held responsible under the law.
She added that her campaign against feudalism would continue until what she described as meaningful systemic change is achieved in Sindh.
