The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation on Saturday vowed to rebuild and revamp 418 roads across the metropolis, which will cost Rs 14 bn, as part of a major decision to better urbanize this megacity and ensure a better flow of traffic and higher safety on its roads for its millions of residents.

This decision is in line with an earlier allocation of Rs5.5bn for rehabilitating 26 important arterial roads, as officials of the government of Sindh and KMC characterized it “a continuing effort by both of us towards resolving Karachi’s longstanding issues.”

In the most recent phase, more streets and roads have been recognized as candidates that would improve commuter connections in and across the metropolitan area.

The development was deliberated upon during a high-level meeting conducted at KMC head office and chaired by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab.

The meeting was also aimed at expediting approvals, reviewing development schemes, and drawing up plans for infrastructure development.

The officials briefed the mayor that 418 roads had been identified for rehabilitation, and preparation work on PC-I documents was currently in progress to ensure that the work is implemented on time.

"Karachi was witnessing unprecedented investment of billions of rupees for infrastructure rehabilitation."

"KMC was equally committed to ensuring performance-based governance with results at its core that directly addressed people’s lives as promised by the Pakistan Peoples Party manifesto."

He pointed out that serious and sustained endeavors were being made to resolve civic problems as quickly as possible and to provide better amenities to citizens as well.

He reiterated that road rehabilitation remains a top priority since it has a direct impact on citizens' lives.
