Karachi: A Drug Screening and Assessment Center has been inaugurated in Usmanabad, Lyari, to ensure the timely identification, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals affected by drug addiction.

According to the spokesperson for the DIG South Zone Karachi, the newly established facility aims to provide a humane and health-focused approach to tackling substance abuse.

Under the new initiative, drug-dependent individuals will be taken to the Drug Screening Center instead of police stations, where they will undergo medical and psychological assessments under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

The center will also offer counseling, guidance, and comprehensive evaluations. Following the screening process, individuals requiring further care will be referred to accredited rehabilitation centers for treatment and recovery.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the DIG South Zone emphasized that people suffering from drug addiction should not be treated as criminals but as individuals deserving of medical care and rehabilitation.

"The elimination of drug abuse and the rehabilitation of affected individuals are both priorities of Sindh Police," the DIG South stated. He added that, with the support of local communities, healthcare institutions, and welfare organizations, the initiative would gradually be expanded to the Union Council level.

The DIG further announced plans to establish additional Drug Screening and Referral Centers across various areas of Karachi's South Zone in the future.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by SSP City, MPA Sajjad Somro, Additional Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Dr. Liaquat Ali, former MPA Babu Ghulam, Lyari Town Chairman Khalil Hot, Dr. Rashid, along with social workers, community leaders, and other distinguished guests.
