Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has rejected the claim that 90 per cent of Karachi’s population purchases drinking water, stating that there are areas in the city where water is supplied through pipelines round the clock.

Speaking on Geo News programme Capital Talk, Mayor Murtaza Wahab said that coal-fired power plants were installed despite the presence of wind corridors.

He reiterated that it is incorrect to say that 90 per cent of Karachi residents rely on purchased water, adding that several areas of the city receive an uninterrupted water supply for 24 hours.

The mayor said that Karachi receives only half of its required water from the federal government, and whenever the issue of Karachi arises, it is politicised by various stakeholders.

He further stated that the government is working to resolve Karachi’s problems, noting that the federal government collects Rs16 trillion in revenue, of which Rs8.5 trillion is transferred to the provinces while the remaining amount goes towards debt servicing.
