'Suicide' of minor girl in Karachi's Surjani turns out to be murder

The death of an 11-year-old girl in Surjani Town, earlier suspected to be a suicide, has been confirmed as murder following a postmortem examination.

According to police, the body of the girl was found on the rooftop of a house late Monday night. Initial investigation suggested that she might have taken her own life. The body was later shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for postmortem, where findings contradicted the earlier claim.

Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya said the child had been sexually assaulted. “The cause of death was asphyxia due to ligature strangulation,” she said.

Police said preliminary inquiries indicated that the victim’s parents were facing marital discord.

At the time of the incident, no one was at home, and the girl was discovered dead upon their return.

Investigators had initially suspected suicide linked to domestic stress, but medical findings confirmed the case as homicide.

Further investigation is under way, while no FIR had been registered till the filing of this report.
