Uncovered drain outside Karachi school poses serious danger to children

Karachi, known as the “City of Lights”, is increasingly becoming unsafe for its residents, especially children, as incidents involving open manholes continue to rise.

Almost daily, reports surface of children falling into uncovered drains or being fatally struck by speeding dumpers on the city’s congested roads.

Another alarming case has emerged from the city’s main artery, MA Jinnah Road, where an open manhole lies exposed despite heavy traffic flow and the presence of Mama Parsi School, one of Karachi’s most renowned educational institutions. With thousands of students passing through the area every day, parents say their children’s lives are at constant risk.

Speaking to Dialogue Pakistan, parents and school van drivers urged authorities to immediately take action against the issue.

One concerned parent said, “We are always stressed about this. Today we came to pick our child ourselves, but what about those who travel by vans? If something happens, who will take responsibility?”

Van drivers echoed the frustration, claiming they have repeatedly rescued young girls who slipped into the open drain. “The bags are heavy, and smaller children often lose balance. We have pulled them out countless times,” one driver said.

Residents have criticized Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab for failing to act despite multiple complaints. They also blame the district administration, noting that the Deputy Commissioner’s office is located right across from the school, yet no action has been taken.

Citizens insist that unless authorities take immediate measures, such negligence will continue to endanger lives, particularly those of children who simply travel to school each day.
