KARACHI: Two former officials of the Karachi Mobility Project (KMP) have been booked in an alleged Rs8.5 billion corruption case involving the Yellow Line BRT project.
Authorities claim the officials authorised an advance payment to contractors in violation of contract terms, causing significant losses to the Sindh government.
The project, which aims to connect Dawood Chowrangi in Quaidabad with Numaish using electric buses, required contractors to secure financing independently from commercial markets.
The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) registered an FIR against former KMP Project Director Zameer Abbasi, former Procurement Director Jhaman Das, and others. The case was filed on behalf of the state by ACE District South Inspector Mohammed Sher Zaman Awan over alleged misuse of authority and financial irregularities.
According to the FIR, the accused authorised an unsecured advance payment of Rs8.5 billion to contractors despite the absence of any contractual provision for such assistance.
The inquiry found that contractors were required to secure financing independently, while the advance payment allegedly caused financial losses to the public exchequer and provided undue benefits to contractors.
Authorities said the role of other individuals involved would be determined during the investigation.
