Pakistan's star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem was gifted a buffalo by his father-in-law to celebrate his historic achievement of winning the country's first Olympic gold medal in 40 years.
The athlete shattered the Olympic record with a monumental 92.97-meter throw in the men's javelin throw event at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Nadeem's father-in-law, Muhammad Nawaz, expressed his family’s immense pride in the athlete's Olympic gold win and told the local media that he wanted to present him with a buffalo as a "gift".
Nawaz said his youngest daughter is a Hafiz-e-Quran. He married her to Arshad Nadeem six years ago and the couple has two sons and a daughter.
According to Nawaz, the Olympic gold medalist is known for his kind nature, and his daughter has always spoken positively about him.
Nadeem was given a hero's welcome upon his return to Pakistan on Sunday. Government ministers and a jubilant crowd greeted him at Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore.
After the airport reception, the 27-year-old sportsman headed to his hometown in Mian Channu, where he was warmly welcomed by his family and friends.
Nadeem's victory marks a watershed moment for Pakistani sports. His gold medal marks the nation's first-ever individual and track-and-field Olympic medal.
Moreover, he is only the second South Asian athlete to stand on the podium in this sport.
The last time Pakistan stood on an Olympic podium was in 1992 when the hockey team clinched bronze at the Barcelona Olympics. Pakistan's first-ever Olympic gold medal was also won by the hockey team in 1984.
