Pakistani Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem disclosed that he received offers to compete for several countries, including the UK, UAE, and Turkey, but remained dedicated to representing Pakistan.
The 27-year-old javelin thrower shattered the Olympic record with a monumental 92.97-meter throw in the men's javelin throw event at the Summer Games.
In an interview, Arshad Nadeem discussed the challenges he faced early in his athletics career.
While acknowledging support from WAPDA and several sponsors, he lacked access to the world-class training facilities enjoyed by other athletes.
He mentioned that while other javelin throwers worldwide have five to six javelins, he only had one world-standard javelin before competing at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Despite challenges, Nadeem said he was determined to represent his country in international events.
"I got offers to play from many countries, including the UAE, UK, and Turkey, but I refused them all," he said.
The star athlete also said, "I am currently a brand ambassador in Uzbekistan, but even then, I declined an offer to compete for them."
However, the interview was given to a private news channel before the Paris Olympics 2024.
Nadeem's victory marks a watershed moment for Pakistani sports. His gold medal marks the nation's first-ever individual and track-and-field Olympic medal.
President Asif Ali Zardari announced to honour Arshad Nadeem with Hilal-e-Imtiaz for his exceptional achievement in securing the country's first Olympic gold medal in four decades.
Nadeem returned to a hero’s welcome on Sunday and headed to his hometown in Mian Channu where he spoke to the media and expressed gratitude to the government for organising youth festivals that provided him a platform to showcase his talent.
