Pakistan batter Babar Azam will not be available for the remainder of the Big Bash League after being called back home for national team camp, Sydney Sixers confirmed on Thursday.
The franchise said its opening batter has been recalled to join Pakistan’s training camp ahead of an upcoming T20 International series against Australia scheduled for next week.
The development was announced shortly before the Sixers were set to face Hobart Hurricanes in the Challenger Final, with the winner advancing to meet Perth Scorchers in the BBL final in Perth on Sunday.
Babar addressed his departure in a video message shared by the Sydney Sixers and the Big Bash League on social media, expressing appreciation for his time with the team. “I have very much enjoyed my time here, and unfortunately, I’m going to leave the team because of national duty,” he said, adding that he had gained valuable experience during his stint in Australia.

Pakistan has not yet announced its squad for the three-match T20I series against Australia, which begins on January 29 in Lahore. The series is expected to serve as preparation for next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. So far, the Pakistan Cricket Board has not released an official statement regarding Babar’s recall.
According to a report by Cricinfo, Babar was initially available to play the full BBL season and was not selected for Pakistan’s recent three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka earlier this month.
Sydney Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes said the club had planned for Babar to remain with the team throughout the tournament. She said the Sixers were “sincerely grateful for the opportunity” to have him represent the side during his stay in Australia.
