Pakistan left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir has reportedly obtained British citizenship, potentially opening the door for his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the future.

The development surfaced after the former Pakistan fast bowler reshared an Instagram post referring to the approval of his British citizenship. Amir had previously indicated that he could become eligible to feature in the IPL once he secured UK nationality.

Speaking on a television programme last year, the 34-year-old said he would be open to playing in the IPL if given the opportunity. Amir had also expressed interest in representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the discussion.

Amir acquired British citizenship after marrying British national Narjis Khan. Despite his eligibility to represent England, the pacer has repeatedly stated that he does not intend to play international cricket for another country and remains committed to Pakistan.

A member of Pakistan’s title-winning squads in the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup and 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Amir has continued to participate in franchise leagues around the world following his retirement from Test cricket.

Pakistani players have not featured in the IPL since 2008 because of strained political relations between Pakistan and India. Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood remains the only Pakistan-born player to appear in the IPL while holding British citizenship.
