Pakistan's cricket fraternity is abuzz with speculation following Babar Azam's surprise resignation as captain of the national white-ball team on October 2.
The 28-year-old batter announced his decision to step down as captain, citing a desire to prioritise his performance, enjoy his batting, and spend quality time with his family.
"I'm sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men's cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month.
"I want to prioritise my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family, which brings me joy."
He also expressed gratitude for the support and excitement to continue contributing to the team as a player.
Following Babar's resignation, a trio has emerged as frontrunners for the coveted role.
Fakhar Zaman, Saud Shakeel, and Salman Ali Agha are reportedly under consideration.
Saud Shakeel was recently appointed Test team vice-captain, replacing Mohammad Rizwan. Fakhar Zaman has valuable experience in leading Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Although Salman Ali Agha lacks leadership experience, his all-round skills make him an attractive candidate.
Notably, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi are not in contention for the captaincy, according to sources.
PCB will soon announce the new captain, ushering in a fresh era for Pakistan cricket.
