Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam expressed his disappointment with the team's performance in Thursday's T20 World Cup match against the United States, which led to a humiliating defeat for the Green Shirts at the hands of a relatively inexperienced team making its tournament debut.
“I am upset, we are not playing good in all three departments,” Babar said while speaking at a post-match press conference in Dallas.
"We are better than that in bowling, we aren't taking wickets in the first six overs. In the middle overs, if your spinner is [are] not taking wickets then pressure is on us,” he added.
Pakistan set a target of 160 runs for the USA, but surprisingly, the Americans tied the score, forcing the match into a super over.
The US team challenged Pakistan by scoring 18 runs in the super over. Unfortunately, Pakistan managed only 13 runs against a strong American bowling attack.
Babar admitted that Pakistan's initial strategy was to seize control of the game by taking early wickets within the first ten overs.
However, their execution faltered, allowing US batsmen Mohank Patel and Andries Gous to build a formidable 68-run partnership.
The skipper acknowledged that underestimating less-experienced teams is a common mindset that can be detrimental. In this case, it proved fatal for Pakistan's performance.
He commended the US team for their skillful handling of the super over, crediting them for their remarkable victory.
This defeat comes as another shock to Pakistan after their losses to Zimbabwe in the 2022 T20 World Cup and Afghanistan in the 50-over World Cup last year.
