Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, is reportedly set to become the next ICC chairperson following the announcement of resignation by current head Greg Barclay.
Jay Shah sought the support of England and Australia cricket boards to secure his position as ICC head, sources said.
According to Indian media, his term as BCCI secretary will expire next year.
Greg Barclay, who is serving his second term as ICC chairman, tendered his resignation during a virtual meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by ICC directors and Australian Cricket Board chairperson Mike Baird.
Sources said the incumbent ICC head decided to resign after Jay Shah claimed to have secured the support of influential cricket boards to become the next ICC chair.
Barclay was elected ICC chairperson in November 2020 and served a second term in 2022. Despite being eligible for a third term, he decided to step down.
“ICC chair Greg Barclay has informed the board that he will not seek a third term and will vacate the position when his current tenure concludes at the end of November. Barclay was first appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022,” according to the ICC spokesperson.
Candidates interested in running for the ICC chair position can submit their nominations by August 27, 2024. If more than one candidate emerges, an election will be held to determine the next international cricket body chair.
The new chairperson will join the ICC Board on December 1, 2024 for a three-year term.
