John Cena’s final WWE opponent has been confirmed, with the 17-time world champion set to face Gunther in his farewell match on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Gunther earned the spot after defeating LA Knight in the final of the Last Time Is Now tournament during the December 5 episode of SmackDown. The 16-man tournament ran for a month, with Gunther widely regarded as the favourite due to his established reputation as a dominant and technically complete performer.

The Austrian wrestler also carries a history of ending major WWE careers, having retired Goldberg earlier this year with a decisive victory at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July.

The upcoming encounter marks the first singles match between Cena and Gunther. WWE describes the contest as a symbolic, high-stakes meeting between generations, with Gunther aiming to deliver a commanding performance and Cena preparing for his last appearance in the ring.

Gunther’s win over LA Knight came in an intense match that saw him initially secure control with a Rear-Naked Choke before transitioning to a Modified STF, a move widely viewed as a message aimed at Cena. Knight resisted but ultimately submitted.
