In a heartwarming moment at the ongoing Paris Olympics, Chinese badminton player Huang Yaqiong received a surprise marriage proposal from her teammate after winning her country's first-ever gold in mixed doubles event.
The touching scene was captured on camera after the medal ceremony on Friday when the 30-year-old Olympian was unexpectedly proposed to by fellow Chinese shuttler Liu Yuchen.
Liu got down on one knee, and presented a wedding ring to Huang, who became emotional and nodded ‘yes’ to the proposal, prompting the crowd to erupt in cheers.
While speaking to the media, Huang expressed her surprise at the proposal, saying she had been entirely focused on her Olympic preparations.
"I can't describe the feeling — I'm just so happy, happy, happy," the teary-eyed badminton player said.
Reflecting on the moment, she said, "Getting the gold medal is recognition of our journey. I was surprised by the engagement ring. I've been focusing on training to become an Olympic champion. I never expected it."
