At least 35 individuals lost their lives, and 43 more were hurt when a vehicle barreled into a gathering of people exercising at the Zhuhai Sports Centre in southern China on Monday, as reported by local officials.
A 62-year-old male driver, known by the surname Fan, is accused of steering an SUV through a barrier and into the Zhuhai Sports Centre in what local police described as a "severe and brutal attack," according to reports from News.Az citing international media.
Chinese news outlets indicated that numerous elderly individuals, alongside teenagers and children, were among the injured.
Fan was apprehended while attempting to escape, according to the police, and he is currently in a coma due to self-inflicted injuries.
The event occurred despite increased security measures in the city, which is currently hosting a significant civil and military airshow.
Authorities have stated that preliminary investigations indicate that the ramming incident was prompted by Fan’s grievances over the outcome of a property settlement following his divorce.
However, due to his coma, he cannot be interrogated by law enforcement.
Most of the videos documenting the incident uploaded by witnesses had been removed from Chinese social media by Tuesday morning, but some footage still being shared online displayed numerous people lying on the ground while being assisted by paramedics and bystanders.
