A devastating fire at a pub in Thailand’s capital Bangkok has killed at least 27 people and injured dozens.
The blaze erupted late Sunday night at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in northern Bangkok, sending thick smoke and flames through the crowded entertainment venue.
Emergency footage showed firefighters searching the smoke-filled building as victims were found near the toilets and other areas where customers had attempted to escape.
Bangkok officials said 63 people were injured, including 22 in critical condition.
Several victims appeared to have rushed toward the back of the building but were unable to find a clear emergency exit.
Police said negligence was the main line of investigation, with authorities examining possible problems involving blocked exits, overloaded electrical systems and the use of flammable materials during renovations.
Bangkok’s disaster management authorities said an initial assessment suggested the fire may have started due to an electrical short circuit in a ceiling air-conditioning unit.
Officials are also examining whether soundproofing materials and interior decorations helped the flames spread rapidly.
Authorities said the pub was licensed as a restaurant and live music venue and had passed a safety inspection earlier this year.
Officials said a full forensic investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether any individuals or operators will face legal action.
