The interim government of Bangladesh has revoked the national holiday on August 15th, a day that commemorates the assassination of the country's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
This decision was made during a meeting of the Advisory Council.
The move follows a series of discussions with various political parties, with the exception of the Awami League. While some parties favored keeping the holiday, others were against it.
The cancellation has sparked controversy, particularly in light of a recent incident where an angry mob set fire to a museum dedicated to Bangabandhu. The museum, formerly Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's private residence, is where he and his family were tragically killed during a military coup on August 15, 1975.
At the time of the coup, Sheikh Hasina, her children, and her sister were abroad.
Reactions to the decision have been mixed. Some view it as a move toward national unity, while others see it as a disregard for the historical significance of the event.
