Bangladesh is reportedly pursuing short-range ballistic missiles from Pakistan to fortify its defense against potential aggression from India, an Indian media outlet reported.
The Indian Defense Research Wing (IDRW) asserts that Bangladesh has reached out to Pakistan for the Abdali Missile, a tactical missile with a range of 400 kilometers, to enhance its deterrent capabilities.
The report implies that Pakistan may consider this request for two main reasons: firstly, to increase its regional influence by supporting Dhaka, which has been increasingly critical of New Delhi; and secondly, due to the Abdali missile’s limited range, which is unlikely to upset the strategic equilibrium between Pakistan and India.
This missile, primarily intended for battlefield applications, aims to protect against Indian incursions along Bangladesh’s extensive border with India.
Nevertheless, the report also highlights potential obstacles in meeting Bangladesh’s request, particularly concerning international arms control frameworks, such as the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), which regulates missile transfers and may affect Islamabad’s ultimate decision.
Although the Abdali missile is designed for short-range tactical operations, experts caution that it could still threaten India’s northeastern states, given its capability to strike major urban centers in that area.
Developed by Pakistan’s Space Research Commission (SUPARCO), this missile system is recognized for its rapid response features, providing Pakistan with a strategic advantage in regional conflicts.
