A Bangladeshi student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, was sent back to her home country on Monday after allegedly liking an anti-India post on social media, Indian media reported, quoting police sources.

The student, who had been enrolled at NIT Silchar since 2021, faced backlash after liking a Facebook post critical of India, which was shared by a former Bangladeshi student.

The controversy gained attention when a former student of Assam University Silchar shared screenshots of the student’s social media activity last week, leading to several complaints being filed against her in Silchar and other parts of Assam.

On Monday morning, the student was escorted to the India-Bangladesh international border in Karimganj, where she crossed into Bangladesh under strict security at around 11 am.

However, NIT Silchar authorities stated that the student had expressed a desire to return home temporarily and had applied for leave on Sunday.
