Israeli Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi and the former Military Advocate General (MAG) was found alive hours after she went missing following her admission to leaking footage that showed the gang rape and torture of a Palestinian detainee at Israel’s Sde Teiman torture camp.
Her resignation on October 31, 2025, came amid intense public outrage and threats. Far-right activists labeled her a “traitor,” while extremist groups tried to storm military bases.
Senior army officials warned of unrest and possible collapse within the ranks, reflecting how deeply Israel’s institutions are being affected by rising internal extremism and instability.
Her revelation destroyed the long-held illusion of Israel’s so-called “moral army,” exposing the deep levels of violence and impunity behind the occupation.
Her disappearance, which came just a day after her resignation, caused nationwide alarm. The discovery of her abandoned car and a letter near the beach fueled fears of foul play and revealed the growing cracks within Israeli society.
Once praised as the first woman to serve as MAG, Tomer-Yerushalmi , she became a whistleblower who revealed what the state had tried to hide.
For Palestinians, the leaked footage of a Palestinian prisoners only confirmed what survivors had long testified to. But for many Israelis, it broke a deeply rooted national belief that a country built on occupation could still claim to follow moral and legal principles.
