The wife of a former prime minister of Nepal was burnt alive on Monday after protesters set fire to his residence during violent demonstrations in the capital, police and local media reported.

According to initial reports, a mob stormed the property and torched it amid widespread unrest triggered by anger over corruption scandals and the government’s decision to shut down social media platforms.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the blaze engulfed the house before firefighters could rescue those trapped inside.

Police confirmed that the former prime minister was not at home at the time of the incident. His wife, however, was unable to escape the fire and succumbed to the flames.

Several domestic staff were also reported missing, though officials said a search and recovery operation was ongoing.

The tragic death adds to the mounting toll from the unrest, which state television said has already left at least 14 people dead and dozens more injured as protesters clashed with security forces.

Authorities have imposed curfews in parts of Kathmandu and surrounding districts, while army units have been placed on standby to assist police.

Officials said investigations are under way into the arson attack, which they described as a “targeted assault” on a political leader’s residence.
