Hanna Steinmüller, a member of Germany’s Green Party, has made history by becoming the first lawmaker to deliver a speech in the Bundestag while holding her infant son during a budget session.
The official Instagram page of the Bundestag confirmed the unprecedented moment, sharing a video that showed the newborn peacefully asleep in his mother’s arms as she spoke at the podium.
Speaking to a German newspaper, the 32-year-old parliamentarian said the move was unplanned: “My baby was asleep, and if I had handed him over to a colleague, he would have woken up — so I kept him with me.”
She added that she wanted people to see children as an integral part of daily life.
“Unfortunately, there is still an expectation that parents should hand over childcare to someone else for the entire day,” she remarked, highlighting the particular struggles of single parents.
Steinmüller has previously brought her baby to parliamentary sessions, a choice that has earned both praise and criticism.

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner expressed her support on Instagram, writing that newborns should be allowed in the chamber under such circumstances.
