Greek authorities are currently investigating the death of a 37-year-old Pakistani migrant, Muhammad Kamran Ashiq, who died while in police custody at a station in central Athens.
His body was discovered on September 21 by the duty officer, and the cause of his death is still under investigation.
According to police reports, Ashiq had been detained on September 18 after allegedly resisting arrest in connection with a harassment incident, although no formal lawsuit was filed.
He was injured during the arrest and sentenced to several months in prison for resisting arrest and causing damage to property. Following a brawl with other detainees, Ashiq was moved to a different holding area where there was no camera surveillance.
However, Maria Sfetsou, the lawyer representing Ashiq’s family, disputes the police timeline. She claims that Ashiq, who held a valid residence permit and worked as a delivery driver, was first detained on September 13.
During his detention, he was reportedly transferred between various stations, unable to contact his relatives or his lawyer. Sfetsou alleges that Ashiq sustained the bruises and injuries during his time in police custody.
A preliminary investigation into the incident is underway, conducted by the police department where Ashiq’s body was found. Additionally, Greece’s Ombudsman will look into the actions of the police officers involved, as confirmed by the citizen protection ministry.
The case has raised concerns about the treatment of detainees and the conditions under which Ashiq was held, prompting calls for a thorough and transparent investigation.
