US media has revealed details about how Israel traced and assassinated Hamas political wing chief Yahya Sinwar in Gaza.

According to The New York Times report,  Yahya Sinwar, the most wanted figure and head of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, was killed during a surprise operation.

Israel holds Sinwar responsible for masterminding the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel and has been searching for him for over a year, conducting several operations in pursuit. However, Sinwar had previously managed to evade capture each time.

Joint Israeli and U.S. intelligence teams also attempted to locate Sinwar, but he had stopped using mobile phones, which hindered their efforts. Israeli forces even raided his home in Khan Yunis, but Sinwar was not present at the time.

Media reports suggest that on October 16, during an Israeli operation in the Rafah area, soldiers came under fire from a building. In response, Israeli forces launched a tank attack and bombed the building.

A drone camera sent in to survey the damage revealed a wounded man sitting on a couch inside the destroyed structure.

The Israeli military spokesperson claimed that three Hamas commanders were killed in the operation, with one suspected to be Yahya Sinwar, although this could not be immediately confirmed.

According to U.S. officials with knowledge of the matter, Israeli soldiers took possession of the body and identified Sinwar using dental records and other biometric data.
