A wedding in India was cancelled after the groom's famiyl demanded that the bride's side arrange a meal for 600 guests due to financial constraints.
The bride's brother took to Reddit to share the unprecedented event, stating that his sister's wedding was cancelled because they couldn't afford to pay for the groom's 600 guests.
He wrote that he and his family live in a small town where there are only two options for weddings, either host a grand wedding costing over INR 1 million or a simple evening tea wedding.
Initially, both families had agreed to split the wedding expenses, as they were of similar financial standing.

However, the groom's family suddenly stepped back from this commitment and demanded that the bride's family pay all the expenses.
This demand was made a few months before the wedding, which was scheduled for May. When the bride’s family refused to comply, the groom’s side cancelled the wedding.
"My mom and sister are crying non-stop. My family is afraid to get involved in legal proceedings due to potential repercussions for my sister's reputation. What can we do here?" the bride's brother asked, as cited by Hindustan Times.

The man presented evidence, including ring and saree the groom's family had gifted the bride during the engagement ceremony, witnessed by several elders from both families.
They also submitted a phone recording of the groom himself cancelling the wedding, which further supported their claim.
“We had to give 600 people food, since you settled for the evening ceremony, we do not have that much money to cover the cost, so we are cancelling the wedding," the groom said in the recorded audio.
One social media user responded to the post, commenting that the matter falls under the Dowry Prevention Act, of 1861.
