India’s water aggression has entered a new phase, with the recent halt in the flow of water from the Kishanganga Dam into the Neelum River raising concerns over a looming water crisis in Pakistan-administered areas.

According to security and local officials, the river's current flow has dropped nearly 40% below normal levels due to India’s latest move.

The Kishanganga Dam—already deemed a contentious water project—has once again emerged as a major environmental and hydrological challenge for Pakistan.

Reports suggest that while India temporarily released water during heightened tensions, it has now abruptly stopped the flow, potentially jeopardizing irrigation and water availability across multiple regions of Neelum Valley.

Further compounding concerns, India has accelerated work on a project that aims to divert water from the Chenab River to the Beas and Ravi river systems—an action widely viewed as violating the spirit of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Experts believe this strategy aligns with India’s long-standing aim to restrict Pakistan’s share of river water, thereby exerting environmental and economic pressure.

It is worth noting that following the April 23, 2025 Pahalgam attack, India threatened to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, and has since begun unilaterally using water as a strategic weapon against Pakistan.
