Iran has carried out the execution of a man on charges of spying for Israel, according to Mizan, the media outlet of the Iranian judiciary.

The man was identified as Ali Ardestani. Iran and Israel have long been locked in a covert conflict, and Tehran has repeatedly arrested and punished people it claims were working with Israel’s intelligence services.

Iranian authorities said that such individuals assisted foreign operations inside the country.

Mizan reported that Ardestani was convicted of espionage for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency after being found guilty of passing on sensitive information. The report said that his death sentence was approved by the Supreme Court and implemented after the completion of legal proceedings.

The execution comes amid a noticeable rise in such cases this year. Iranian officials say the increase follows a sharp escalation in tensions after direct clashes between Iran and Israel in June, when Israeli and US forces targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities.
