WASHINGTON: A shooter who opened fire on a White House checkpoint ?has been killed when he was shot by officers following the attack and died upon arrival at the hospital on Saturday night, the Secret Service said.
According to a press release from the agency to Reuters, the man attempted to open fire on officers in front of the White House after he got out of his vehicle and took out a gun from his bag.
"The gunman was shot by officers," said the statement, adding that another individual was also wounded by shots during the incident.
However, the report did not clarify the status of the victim. According to a second report from the agency quoted by several news agencies, there were no details on whether the bystander sustained his injury while "the gunman opened fire" or while "exchanged fire."
The gunman was an emotionally disturbed individual with a "stay-away order," a law enforcement source told Reuters.
