New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani became visibly emotional during a public meeting with citizens after an encounter with a Pakistani woman.
Following his election as mayor, Zohran Mamdani met with 142 New York residents to listen to their concerns and hear their suggestions for the city. During the same session, he also met a woman from Pakistan.
The woman told Zohran Mamdani that her English was not very strong, so she had written her message in advance. She congratulated him and said that in a world where people are increasingly divided, he had helped restore compassion and kindness among people.
Introducing herself as Samina, she said she was originally from Pakistan and asked Mamdani whether he could speak Urdu. In response, Mamdani said that he could speak Urdu, although he was unable to read it fluently.
Mamdani then asked which part of Pakistan she was from, to which she replied that she belonged to Lahore. On hearing this, he remarked that Lahore is a beautiful city and shared that he had visited the city once himself.
Samina went on to say that New York is a beautiful city with impressive buildings, but added that Mamdani had changed people’s hearts since taking office.
She said that the honesty reflected in his eyes could not be hidden from anyone. Her words moved Mamdani to tears.
It is worth noting that Zohran Mamdani has become New York’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest mayor in over a century.
He took the oath of office a day earlier at a ceremony held at City Hall, placing his hand on the Holy Quran belonging to his grandparents.
Addressing the gathering, Mayor Mamdani said that a new era had begun and assured citizens that from this day forward, he would serve all New Yorkers without discrimination.
