A 37-year-old woman was shot dead by a US immigration officer in Minneapolis, triggering outrage after city leaders disputed the federal government’s claim that the killing was an act of self-defence.
The Department of Homeland Security identified the woman as Renee Nicole Good and described her as a “violent rioter” who, it said, attempted to run over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers with her vehicle.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected that version of events, accusing the agent of abusing his authority. “This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying,” he said, adding in angry remarks that ICE agents should leave the city.
The shooting comes as hundreds of ICE officers have been sent to Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the Trump administration’s expanded push against undocumented immigrants.
According to authorities, the incident took place at around 10:25am on Wednesday. Several videos shared online appear to capture the moments leading up to and during the shooting.
A video shows a maroon SUV stopped in the middle of a residential street. A group of people, who appear to be protesters, are gathered along the sidewalk, while law enforcement vehicles are visible nearby.
Immigration agents are seen approaching the SUV. They step out of their vehicle and order the woman sitting in the driver’s seat to exit. One agent pulls at the driver’s side door, while another stands near the front of the SUV.
From the available videos, it is unclear how close the agent near the front was to the vehicle or whether he was actually hit. Moments later, as the SUV begins to move away, an agent opens fire.
Three gunshots can be heard. The SUV then veers out of control and crashes into a parked car along the street.
President Donald Trump later claimed on Truth Social that an ICE officer had been “viciously” run over during the encounter. He said it was “hard to believe he is alive” and added that the officer was recovering in hospital.
Trump also accused what he called the “Radical Left” of routinely threatening and attacking law enforcement personnel, including ICE agents.
Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara said that the woman had been sitting in her vehicle, which was blocking traffic on Portland Avenue, when a federal officer approached her on foot. He said she then attempted to drive away.
