Pro-Palestinian supporters expressed outrage as the United States once again vetoed a Gaza ceasefire resolution at the United Nations Security Council, the sixth such move by Washington since the war began. The US argued that the draft favored Hamas because it did not explicitly acknowledge Israel’s right to defend itself.

According to reports, 14 out of the 15 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, leaving the United States isolated in its opposition.

The text called for an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties” and urged Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid reaching the besieged enclave.

The resolution was put forward by ten non-permanent Council members, including Pakistan. Its rejection comes at a time when the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening and an inquiry by the UN declared tha Israel is committing a genocide in the Palestinian enclave.

Outside the UN headquarters, pro-Palestinian activists staged demonstrations and confronted US envoy Morgan Ortagus, who defended the veto.

She argued that the draft resolution “fails to condemn Hamas or recognize Israel’s right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimizes false narratives benefitting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this Council.”

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour denounced the US move as “deeply regrettable,” saying it blocked the Security Council from fulfilling its responsibility to protect civilians amid “atrocities and genocide.”

He added that the Council’s credibility was undermined by the repeated use of veto power in the face of mass suffering.

The Palestinian resistance group Hamas also condemned Washington’s decision, accusing the United States of being a full partner in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Hamas welcomed the efforts of the ten countries that backed the resolution and urged greater international pressure on Israel to halt its military campaign.
