Pro-Palestinian supporters expressed outrage as the United States once again vetoed a Gaza ceasefire resolution at the United Nations Security Council, the sixth such move by Washington since the war began. The US argued that the draft favored Hamas because it did not explicitly acknowledge Israel’s right to defend itself.
According to reports, 14 out of the 15 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, leaving the United States isolated in its opposition.
The text called for an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties” and urged Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid reaching the besieged enclave.
The resolution was put forward by ten non-permanent Council members, including Pakistan. Its rejection comes at a time when the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening and an inquiry by the UN declared tha Israel is committing a genocide in the Palestinian enclave.
Outside the UN headquarters, pro-Palestinian activists staged demonstrations and confronted US envoy Morgan Ortagus, who defended the veto.
She argued that the draft resolution “fails to condemn Hamas or recognize Israel’s right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimizes false narratives benefitting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this Council.”

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour denounced the US move as “deeply regrettable,” saying it blocked the Security Council from fulfilling its responsibility to protect civilians amid “atrocities and genocide.”
He added that the Council’s credibility was undermined by the repeated use of veto power in the face of mass suffering.
The Palestinian resistance group Hamas also condemned Washington’s decision, accusing the United States of being a full partner in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
Hamas welcomed the efforts of the ten countries that backed the resolution and urged greater international pressure on Israel to halt its military campaign.

There’s nothing more dangerous than giving one country the power to veto resolutions simply because they benefit from tragedies. The one thing Elon Musk got right was suggesting the US leave the UN. https://t.co/CavIH7Di6P

Once again... America uses its veto right to reject the decision to stop the war in #Gaza, confirming for the millionth time that it is the official sponsor of the #genocide occurring there. @UN The veto right is a crime against humanity. pic.twitter.com/j8hoqvAeQs

Every time this happens I’ll ask again what the point of the UN is when the US alone can veto everything https://t.co/Ipqorm1awp

The US is the biggest threat to the Middle East. Washington has vetoed peace again, just as it did for decades while Israel massacred Palestinians and invaded Lebanon. The truth is simple: without American weapons, money, and veto power, Israel’s genocide would end tomorrow. https://t.co/KFjV6tLSXz
