A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, killing at least 144 people and injuring over 700, according to state media.
The tremor, which originated northwest of Sagaing, was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, causing widespread destruction.
Myanmar's military government declared a state of emergency in six regions and issued a rare appeal for international aid. Hospitals, bridges, and roads sustained heavy damage, with hospitals in the capital Naypyidaw overwhelmed by casualties.
In neighboring Thailand, three people died, and at least 81 workers were trapped when a skyscraper under construction in Bangkok collapsed.
Authorities launched search and rescue efforts while declaring an emergency zone in the capital. The tremors were felt across the region, including in China, India, Cambodia, and Bangladesh.
The Red Cross reported severe infrastructure damage in Myanmar, raising concerns over the safety of large dams. Governments, including those of India, France, and the European Union, have offered assistance.
Pakistan expressed solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand, activating its embassies in Yangon and Bangkok to assist citizens. The Foreign Office also established a crisis management unit to monitor developments. Rescue efforts continue as authorities assess the full extent of the disaster.
