Pakistan, on Wednesday, expressed serious concerns over the rising tensions in the Middle East region and urged the US and Iran to remain calm after their respective overnight attacks.
The campaign to put an end to the Middle East conflict has faced a setback due to rising tensions as a result of Iranian attacks against ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The Iranians have launched attacks on at least three ships in recent days, which resulted in US strikes against Iranian targets on Tuesday and further retaliation by the Iranians against Gulf nations.
“Pakistan is of the view that the resumption of conflict is in no one’s interest,” the Foreign Office (FO) said in its statement.
“Pakistan urges all sides to exercise restraint and avoid any action which may further destabilize the region. Engagement and diplomacy are the only means to realize our common goal of peace in the region,” the statement said.
"Pakistan calls upon all parties to respect their respective commitments made through the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which continues to be the cornerstone of understanding, mutual respect and prosperity for the region and beyond."
It must be noted that Pakistan is willing to continue acting as a mediator between the two countries.Pakistan has served as a mediator between the US and Iran all throughout the year and was appreciated by the current Trump administration because of its mediation.
This is certainly not the first instance of strikes between the US and Iran in the midst of a ceasefire agreement that has been active since April.
In August, the US launched strikes against Iran due to the downing of a US Apache helicopter, which, according to the US President Donald Trump, took place recently. As a result, Iran retaliated to this attack by attacking several bases and targets in the Gulf region.
Following these strikes, the Islamabad MoU was concluded, giving both parties 60 days to reach a comprehensive agreement on Iran’s nuclear prHowever, earlier today at the Nato summit in Ankara, Trump said that the ceasefire was “over”, adding, “It’s just a waste of time dealing with them. I’ll let our wonderful negotiators keep talking if they want, but I don’t see it. I don’t like these people.”
He further warned that the US would hit Iran “hard” tonight.
