A video showing police forcible removing a woman's hijab after arresting her for protesting in support of Palestine at Arizona State University (ASU) in the US sparked outrage on social media.
According to ABC News, a rally was recently held at the ASU campus by students to express solidarity with Palestine.
The publication said the police arrested almost 70 students for protesting against the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
ABC News reported that the four women were being forced to remove their hijab by police.
One of the incidents also went viral on social media, in which a woman surrounded by male police officers was forced to remove her scarf.
Condemning the incident, Azza Abuseif, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Arizona, said the removal of a hijab is a violation of one’s privacy and identity.
“You feel violated, you’re hurt, and it’s dehumanising. It’s part of their identity to wear the hijab. This is a gross violation of the religious rights of peaceful protesters," he said.
Pro-Palestinian protests spread to college campuses in the United States over the growing human toll of Israel’s aggression in Gaza.
Sit-ins and demonstrations are calling for colleges to sever ties with Israel and with companies they say profit from the conflict.
The US has consistently denied the gross human rights violations being committed by Israel in Palestine.
At least 34,262 Palestinians have been killed and 77,229 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.
