DOHA: The State of Qatar has strongly condemned what it described as a “cowardly Israeli attack” that struck residential headquarters in Doha housing members of the Hamas political bureau.

In an official statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the strike a “criminal assault” and a “blatant violation of international laws and norms,” warning that it posed a dangerous threat to the security and safety of Qatari citizens and residents.

Authorities confirmed that security services, civil defense, and other agencies immediately responded to the incident, taking necessary measures to contain its consequences and protect surrounding areas.

“The State of Qatar affirms that it will not tolerate this reckless Israeli behavior and continued tampering with regional security, or any action that targets its security and sovereignty,” the ministry said, adding that high-level investigations are under way.

Officials said more details would be released as the inquiry progresses.

A senior Hamas source told Al Jazeera that leaders of the group were targeted while discussing United States President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Israeli media, citing a senior Israeli official, said the attack was aimed at top Hamas leaders, including Khalil al-Hayya, its Gaza chief.
