Communal violence erupted in India's Murshidabad after an offensive signboard displaying derogatory remarks about Allah was displayed at a Kartik Puja pandal in Beldanga district. Authorities imposed a curfew and suspended internet services in a bid to control the violence.
According to Indian media reports, tensions flared on Saturday when videos of the Islamophobic LED board went viral on social media, sparking outrage among the Muslim community.
Clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups quickly ensued, resulting in widespread vandalism, stone-pelting, and the ransacking of homes and shops.
Police intervened with baton charges to disperse the crowd, but the unrest spread to surrounding areas.
As per reports, several Muslims were injured, with three people hospitalised. No casualties were reported by the authorities.
In the aftermath of the violence, West Bengal police took to X and stated that 17 individuals had been arrested for vandalism and rioting.
Authorities reassured the public that strict action would be taken against "lawbreakers." They also urged citizens to refrain from spreading or acting on misinformation that could "disrupt peace."
This incident highlights the increasing communal polarisation in India under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s rule. Critics argue that the BJP's policies have emboldened far-right elements, further marginalising India's Muslim community and fueling interfaith conflicts
