A haunting image captured by Reuters photographer Muhammad Salem on October 17, 2023, has shed light on the devastating human cost of the Israeli aggression in Gaza.
The picture was named World Press Photo of the Year and won a Pulitzer Prize.
The image shows a Palestinian woman, Inas Abu Maamar, grieving over the small, shrouded body of her 5-year-old niece, Saly.
Saly's tragic fate was sealed when Israeli bombing claimed the lives of her mother, younger sister, grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt, and three cousins.
Inas' brother, Ramez, had moved his family to his in-laws' home seeking refuge, but it too was bombed the next day.
The 37-year-old woman, who has lost her sister along with four children to Israeli attacks, recounted the horrors she witnessed.
“I tried to wake her up. I couldn’t believe she was dead,” she said, recalling the moment she found Saly's lifeless body in the hospital morgue.
Now back in her damaged home in Khan Younis, Inas sits amidst debris, near the grave of her niece.
“We lost all hope in everything. Even the grave was not safe,” she lamented.
Her family has been forced to relocate three times, spending four months in a tent, seeking respite from the relentless bombardment.
The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas carried out an operation in Israel, killing 1,200 people, including 350 Israeli soldiers, and taking 250 hostages.
In response, Israel launched a series of airstrikes on Gaza and initiated a ground operation, which continues to this day.
The ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza since October 7 has resulted in approximately 42,000 killed, over 96,000 injured, and more than 10,000 people missing.
