US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Michael Waltz as America’s next National Security Advisor. Waltz is known for his tougher stance on China and his support for stronger strategic ties with India.

Michael Waltz, a former defense policy director under Secretaries of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates, views India as a key partner in countering China’s influence in the region. He also considers India essential in monitoring Afghanistan's strategic developments.

According to media reports, Waltz sees India as a critical ally in addressing global strategic challenges and combating terrorism.

In 2023, he led a bipartisan American Congressional delegation to attend Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address at the Red Fort.

The previous year, Waltz introduced bipartisan legislation to enhance US arms sales to India. However, he also advocates urging New Delhi to reduce its dependence on Russia, particularly in oil imports.

Trump’s return to power has generated significant regional interest, as nations anticipate the new administration’s policy approach on key issues, including relations with China, the Israel’s war on Gaza, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Pakistan, too, has expressed hope for strengthening ties with the US under the incoming Trump administration in January. However, how Waltz’s pro-India stance as National Security Advisor might impact Pakistan’s strategic cooperation with the US remains to be seen.
