US President-elect Donald Trump announced to end birthright citizenship, a provision under the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which grants citizenship to anyone born on US soil, regardless of their parents' immigration status.
During an interview on Meet the Press, Trump reiterated his hardline stance on immigration, vowing to deport undocumented immigrants and their families, including those with American-born children.
"You have no choice," he stated, emphasising the need to enforce immigration laws strictly.
While Trump aims to implement his controversial policies, he expressed a willingness to collaborate with Democrats to protect "Dreamers"—undocumented immigrants who entered the US as children—allowing them to remain in the country under specific legislation.
Referring to undocumented immigrants as "criminals," Trump prioritised their deportation, stating, "We have to get the criminals out of the country, but we are starting with the criminals."
He also affirmed that eliminating birthright citizenship would be a top priority from his first day in office.
The announcement has sparked debate over the constitutional and social implications of such a policy.
