US President Donald Trump said he will "work with Pakistan and India to see if, after a thousand years,” a solution to the Kashmir issue can be reached.
In a recent social media post, the 78-year-old US President commended Pakistani and Indian leadership for using their wisdom to recognise the dangers of escalation, noting the aggression “could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much."
He said saving millions from the brink of war is “a legacy of brave actions.”
"I am proud that the US was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision," Trump added, noting that he intends to increase trade with both countries to build stronger ties, although this has not yet been formally discussed.
Trump also expressed his willingness to mediate the decades-long Kashmir dispute, stating, "I will work with both to see if after a thousand years a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir. God bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done."
Earlier, Trump announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire under US mediation.
After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate cease-fire,” he said. “Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter"
Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the ceasefire agreement in an interview, adding that the ceasefire had been in place since 4:30 pm.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also weighed in, revealing that both he and the Vice President had been in contact with senior Pakistani and Indian officials over the past 48 hours.
“I am pleased to announce the Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Masri also confirmed the ceasefire agreement and said that all military operations on both sides would be halted.
