A 10-year-old boy in China alerted local police about his father storing illegal drugs at home after being scolded for not completing his homework.
The incident occurred in early January in Yongning County, where the boy, upset and disheartened by his father’s reprimand, left the house in anger.
He stopped at a nearby shop to use the phone and dialed 1010, China’s emergency number, to report the matter.
The fifth-grader informed authorities that his father was hiding poppy shells, a banned and dangerous substance under Chinese law. The boy waited for police to arrive and search his home.
Upon investigation, officers recovered eight dried poppy shells hidden on the balcony.
The father claimed he intended to use them for medicinal purposes.

However, despite his explanation, he was detained and the case was handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Brigade for further action.
Following the incident, Chinese authorities issued a reminder that possessing poppy husks without authorisation is illegal and punishable under the law.
Poppy husks, though traditionally used in medicines to alleviate pain and stress, are strictly prohibited in China due to their potential use in manufacturing opium.

The case also highlighted China’s historical conflict with Britain over the opium trade in 19th century, which led to widespread addiction in the country and resulted in the Opium Wars, ultimately leaving China defeated and humiliated.
