Queensland's Department of Environment has launched an investigation after a viral video surfaced showing a group of children using a python as a skipping rope.
The footage, recorded in the town of Woorabinda, shows nearly six children jumping over a snake over a meter long while laughing and playing.
In the video, the children identify the snake as a black-headed python, though it remains unclear whether the reptile was alive or dead.
According to Australian media reports, the video has sparked environmental concerns. A spokesperson for the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation condemned the act and announced a formal inquiry into the matter.
“We strongly condemn such inappropriate behavior and will conduct a full investigation. We urge all Queenslanders to treat animals with respect, whether they are alive or dead,” the statement read.
The department also noted that harming or killing a black-headed python could result in a fine of up to $12,615.
Following the video's circulation, a broader discussion on wildlife conservation has emerged among locals, raising awareness about the ethical treatment of animals.
