In a bizarre incident, a robot in South Korea has committed suicide after being overworked by the city council, CNBC reported on Friday.

The incident occurred last Thursday in South Korea's Gumi city at a government municipal office where the robot had been performing routine administrative tasks for about a year.

"The robot was making rapid rounds before committing suicide and then deliberately walked towards a 6-foot-high ladder and jumped from there," according to officials investigating the incident.

The robot civil servant, developed by American company Bear Robotics, was capable of advanced tasks, including daily document deliveries, city promotion, and delivering information to the residents.

The robot used to work from 9am to 6pm, but its excessive workload apparently led to the bizarre incident.

Investigators have collected parts of the robot for evaluation, suspecting that tampering with its programming may have caused its strange behaviour and ultimate suicide.
