The government is mulling to raise the salaries of public sector employees by 15-20 percent in the upcoming fiscal year budget 2024-25, slated to be unveiled this week.

According to sources, the increase was proposed by the Ministry of Finance to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sources said that the ministry proposed an increase of Rs40,000 to Rs60,000 in the monetisation policy of the bureaucracy.

Sources added that the monetisation policy for government officers up to Grade 20 would be increased by Rs65,000 to Rs105,000.

However, the expected increase will put a burden of additional Rs80 billion on the national exchequer.

On the other hand, public sector employees of grades 1 to 16 have demanded the government to hike the medical and conveyance allowance by 200 percent.

The current medical and conveyance allowance for Grade 1 to Grade 16 are Rs1,800 and Rs1,500, respectively.

However, the final decision to raise the salaries and allowances of the government officials will be taken by PM Shehbaz Sharif in consultation with the Ministry of Finance and the cabinet.
