The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has hiked the power tariff by Rs5.76 per unit for the residents of Karachi on account of fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for May and June 2024.

According to the notification issued by the regulatory body, the KE consumers will be charged Rs2.59 per unit for May and Rs3.17 for June in FCA.

The said charges will be added to the electricity bills of October and November 2024.

However, Nepra clarified in its notification that the May and June 2024 FCA will apply to all consumer categories except electric vehicle charging stations and lifeline consumers who use up to 50 units per month.

Nepra directed K-electric to show the FCA charges separately in the bill on the basis of the number of units consumers used in the respective month the adjustment pertains to.

The hike in power tariff for consumers of Karachi came after Nawaz Sharif announced cutting Rs14 per unit in power tariff for consumers in Punjab using 201-500 units per month.

The move sparked debate in other provinces, while dealing with the criticism, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif clarified that the power relief package in Punjab was solely funded by the provincial government.
